HVAC 100 - Introduction to HVAC Technology

This course covers many of the topics needed for students to be successful in the mechanical construction industry. Its modules include: history of the HVAC industry, OSHA 10-hour construction industry training, communication and customer service skills, and an introduction to blueprints and other types of mechanical drawings. This course will use lecture, lab and online simulation to prepare students for the nationally recognized certification exam as part of the outcome assessment learning objectives.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon the successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Investigate the earliest uses of refrigeration and heating equipment and the inventors that developed them.
  2. Discuss current employment opportunities in the mechanical construction industry and understand the qualifications required employment.
  3. Comply with OSHA-10 training requirements and understand the safety obligations of workers, supervisors, and managers to ensure a safe workplace.
  4. Discuss the causes and results of accidents and the impact of accident costs.
  5. Define safe work procedures, proper use of personal protective equipment, and working with hazardous chemicals.
  6. Demonstrate ability to understand various elements used in commercial and residential blueprints.
  7. Identify the types of architectural lines, symbols, notations, and abbreviations used in print reading.
  8. Identify types of drawings such as elevation views, section views, detail views, and construction materials.
  9. Practice techniques for communicating effectively with customers, co-workers and supervisors.
  10. List examples that emphasize the importance of verbal and written information and instructions on the job.
  11. Attain readiness to take the OSHA 10 Certification exam.

CERTIFICATION STATEMENT:

Ivy Tech cannot guarantee that any student will pass a certification or licensing exam. Your success will be determined by several factors beyond the instruction you are given in the classroom including your test-taking skills, your willingness to study outside of class, and your satisfactory completion of appropriate practice exams. Certification and licensure exam questions are drawn from databases of hundreds of possible questions; therefore, a thorough understanding of the subject matter is required. Ivy Tech's coursework is designed to assist you in understanding the material sufficiently to provide a firm foundation for your studies as you prepare for the exam.
