This course provides advanced skills and knowledge in Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW). This course is designed for intermediate welders, auto service and body technicians, and individuals in the HVAC industry. Safe practices in advanced Gas Tungsten Arc Welding are emphasized throughout the course. In addition, this course will prepare students to take nationally recognized certification exam(s).

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate the proper safety procedures in Gas Tungsten Arc welding. [e,f]
  2. Learn proper AWS Standard Welding Terms and Definition. [e,f]
  3. Set up and shut down the Gas Tungsten Arc station properly and safely. [e,f]
  4. Select and determine the proper electrode and nozzle size for a job. [e,f]
  5. Understand welding procedure specifications (WPS) and be able to follow them. [e,f]
  6. Perform destruction testing with appropriate welds. [e,f]
  7. Perform proper techniques of preparation of tungsten electrodes. [e,f]
  8. Perform balling of tungsten electrodes in preparation for aluminum welding. [e,f]
  9. Gain insight into the Certification for AWS welders. [e,f]
  10. Practice welding, following WPS and instructors guidelines. [e,f]
  11. Lap/T/Square groove/ w/wire on 10ga.steel. [e,f]
  12. Lap/T/Square groove on 10ga. Stainless Steel. [e,f]
  13. Lap/T on 10ga. Aluminum. [e,f]
  14. Workmanship sample prints; steel, stainless steel, aluminum. [e,f]
  15. Attain readiness to take American Welding Society certification exam. [e,f]
  16. Demonstrate ability to read and interpret technical documents. [b,e]
  17. Demonstrate ability to use various types of software applicable to course. [a]
