This course provides an orientation and theoretical background to the understanding of human behavior, utilizing an ecological system framework. It will focus on the development of individuals and families through the lifespan, with attention to the institutional and societal factors that impede the development and quality of life of diverse populations.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Identify theories and demonstrate knowledge of biological, sociological, cultural, psychological and spiritual development across the lifespan.
  2. Identify the range of social systems in which people live.
  3. Identify the ways social systems promote or deter people in maintaining or achieving health and well-being.
  4. Identify empirically based theories and demonstrate knowledge that focuses on the interactions between and among individuals and families.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding that the applicability of theories may vary due to diversity (i.e. age, class, color, culture, disability, ethnicity, family structure, gender, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, spirituality, and an international context).
  6. Demonstrate the use of research to further understanding of human growth and development and the use of theories in social work practice.
  7. Discuss the necessity of developing a theoretical framework that is consistent with social work values and ethics.
  8. Apply theory and theoretical concepts to individuals and families.
  9. Demonstrate critical thinking skills in examination and application of the course content.
  10. Demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills through class presentations, group discussions, and written assignments.


COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include - Exploration of the foundations for social systems theory.

Understanding of general features of social systems theory.

Discuss theoretical perspective on human behavior and the social environment.

Explore theories of psychology used by human service workers.

Discuss psychosocial theory, and feminist perspective theory.

Understand the psychological systems and their impact on infancy and childhood.

Investigation of life stages including infancy, childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, middle adulthood, and later adulthood and how all are impacted by issues such as ethnocentrism, racism, gender roles, sexism, and sexual orientation.
