Provides an understanding of the health care needs of adults experiencing non-complex alterations in health within the context of select medical-surgical concepts. Examines the roles of the licensed practical nurse and the registered nurse in applying the nursing process and implementing the ordered plan of treatment.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Describe Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) competencies as they relate to collaborative, safe, culturally competent, and holistic patient-centered care. (SLO 1)
- Describe the etiology, pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of common alterations in health. (SLO 2)
- Discuss the roles of the licensed practical nurse and associate degree registered nurse in relation to coordination and continuity of care as they collaborate with other members of the inter/intraprofessional team. (SLO 1, 5, 7)
- Describe current techniques and strategies for assessing and providing evidence based nursing care to adults with alterations in health within the context of identified concepts. (SLO 4)
- Apply basic principles of the nursing process to select patient care scenarios. (SLO 4)
- Describe the ordered plan of treatment of adults experiencing non-complex alterations in health. (SLO 2, 4)
- Discuss the basic health teaching needs of adults and their significant others while providing care in a collaborative, safe, culturally competent, and holistic patient-centered environment. (SLO 1, 2, 5)
COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -
Managing Care/QSEN competencies
Philosophical concepts related to individuals, environment, nursing, health, and the nursing education process
Etiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations and diagnostic testing
Introductory identification and prioritization of nursing problems and utilization of the Nursing Process
Nursing care and ordered plan of treatment
Introduction to safe management of care
Introduction to perioperative care
Common non complex alterations in health: cellular regulation (immunity, infection, inflammation), urinary function, digestive, gastrointestinal and metabolic function, fluids and electrolytes, perioperative care, tissue integrity, and mobility
