NRSG 201 - Complex Medical Surgical Nursing for the ASN Clinical


PREREQUISITES: NRSG 106 - Pharmacology for Nursing ; and, depending on program track, must complete one of the following: (a) NRSG 122 - Introduction to ASN Transition  (LPN to ASN track students who graduated from Ivy Tech greater than 2 years ago or who graduated from a Practical Nursing program outside Ivy Tech); OR (b) NRSG 123 - Transition to ASN Lab/Clinical  (Paramedic to ASN track students); OR, (c) NRSG 110 - Medical Surgical Nursing II  and NRSG 111 - Medical Surgical Nursing II Clinical  (ASN Traditional track students), MATH 123 , MATH 135 , MATH 136 , MATH 137 , MATH 200  or higher

Allows the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to provide ethical, culturally competent, and holistic care for adults experiencing complex alterations in health within the context of all body systems. Emphasis is placed on the prevention of illness and the maintenance, promotion and restoration of health, as well as the support of death with dignity and implementation of the ordered plan of treatment. The nursing process provides the framework for problem solving and critical thinking in providing nursing care. Leadership concepts utilized in the management of direct patient care are explored.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate responsibility and accountability while providing patient-centered care within the scope of practice of the associate degree nurse. (SLO 1, 7)
  2. Demonstrate proficient use of technology and incorporation of evidence-based practices to support safe, effective, quality patient care. (SLO 2, 3, 4)
  3. Function proficiently within inter/intraprofessional teams to achieve quality patient care. (SLO 1, 5)
  4. Provide individualized care based on patient values and evidence-based practices to improve quality and the delivery of safe patient care. (SLO 4, 6)
  5. Utilize the nursing process to provide ethical, culturally competent and holistic care for adults experiencing complex alterations in health. (SLO 6, 7)
  6. Formulate individualized teaching plans for patients with complex alterations in health in collaboration with patients, families and the inter/intraprofessional team. (SLO 1, 4, 5, 7)
  7. Apply leadership concepts and best practice guidelines for safe delegation when organizing and managing care for groups of patients. (SLO 1, 8)
  8. Demonstrate proficiency in complex drug dosage calculations and medication administration. (SLO 1)
  9. Prioritize nursing care provided to individuals from culturally and ethnically diverse backgrounds experiencing complex alterations in health. (SLO 1, 2, 6, 7)

Practical application of the content of NRSG 200  

Care of adults experiencing complex alterations in health
