Examines theories and research related to human drug use and abuse. Drug pharmacology; physiological effects of drugs on the nervous system; social and psychological issues affecting drug abuse; the treatment, effects, prevention of substance abuse; and therapeutic uses of drugs in mental illness will be addressed.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of drug use and abuse.
- Identify the various scientific research methods used in evaluating drug use and abuse.
- Differentiate various drugs and their effects on the nervous system.
- Describe drug psychopharmacology.
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the social, psychological, and behavioral reasons for drug abuse.
- Analyze various treatment methods of drug abuse.
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the prevention of drug abuse.
- Critique the treatment of mental illness with drugs.
