PSYC 210 - Drugs and Human Behavior

Examines theories and research related to human drug use and abuse. Drug pharmacology; physiological effects of drugs on the nervous system; social and psychological issues affecting drug abuse; the treatment, effects, prevention of substance abuse; and therapeutic uses of drugs in mental illness will be addressed.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of drug use and abuse.
  2. Identify the various scientific research methods used in evaluating drug use and abuse.
  3. Differentiate various drugs and their effects on the nervous system.
  4. Describe drug psychopharmacology.
  5. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the social, psychological, and behavioral reasons for drug abuse.
  6. Analyze various treatment methods of drug abuse.
  7. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the prevention of drug abuse.
  8. Critique the treatment of mental illness with drugs.
