PSYC 260 - Health Psychology PREREQUISITES: PSYC 101 - Introduction to Psychology and ENGL 111 - English Composition PROGRAM: Behavioral Sciences CREDIT HOURS: 3 LECTURE HOURS: 3 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall, 2018
An introduction to health and emphasizing mind-body issues, the biopsychosocial model and cognitive behavioral theory. The course will emphasize research methods and current practice related to stress and pain, as well as health related behaviors. Within the course, treatment approaches, behavioral risk factors and public health issues will be addressed.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Describe health and related research methods, theory and practice.
- Explain biopsychosocial models, cognitive behavior theory and social learning theory as they pertain to health attitudes and behavior.
- Use theory and research methods to apply a model of change for health related behaviors.
- Discuss the role of stress in health and illness and how to apply stress management techniques to enhance health and wellness.
- Analyze effects of personality to health related behaviors and mind-body relationship.
- Compare and contrast coping skills for acute and chronic diseases and illness, including cancer, AIDS and autoimmune disorders.
- Differentiate between physiological and psychological influences on cardiovascular health.
- Differentiate between acute and chronic pain and analyze the three types of pain, including physiological and psychological approaches to treatment.
- Investigate the current approaches related to the immune system.
- Evaluate the influences of cultural values, perceptions and beliefs on health in general.
- Compare and contrast various methods by which one can recognize and change health attitudes.
- Integrate a complete understanding of treatment approaches including holistic healing.
