Provides essential skills in practical and creative page layout. Uses an industry standard desktop publishing software designed for single and multi-page documents as a tool for executing layouts. Produces samples for student portfolios, which may include logos, stationery, charts, forms, editorials, menus, brochures, and calendars.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Plan and visualize ideas by means of in-depth research, thumbnail sketches and development drafts (or mock-ups).
- Design creative, practical concept-based design solutions for specific industry-based situations requiring page layout.
- Select the appropriate software to build components for a page layout.
- Produce professional single and multi-page layouts using industry recognized page layout software.
- Adhere to size and medium specifications.
- Employ advanced typographic and design skills.
- Prepare and package files for appropriate professional output.
- Engage in presentation and critical peer evaluation
COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -
- Naming conventions and file organizations
- File planning and creation
- Text–importing, profession publication text formatting including but not limited to tabs, tables, drop caps, paragraph rules, find and change, glyphs, spell check etc.
- Images & graphics–prepare, place, embed, link,effects, scale & text wrap
- Color–spot, process, gradient, opacity
- Style sheets–text & object
- Master pages, document pages, single and facing pages
- Output–prepare, save, print, print booklet, preflight and package
