ENGL 073 - Co-Requisite Writing Strategies COREQUISITES: ENGL 111 - English Composition PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITE: IVYT 111 First Year Seminar

Prepares students for the demands of writing in a variety of college-level courses. Provides students with the necessary skills to compose focused, organized, and well-developed expository writings on a number of topics. Requires students to revise their work according to standard writing conventions, including style, grammar, and mechanics. Introduces the process of research. Supplements and supports coursework delivered in ENGL 111 .
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Develop strategies for composition process such as drafting, collaborating, revising, and peer evaluation to support the production of written documents.
- Apply the conventions of standard written English
- Develop an understanding of how the components of the rhetorical situation relate to the writing process
- Develop critical reading and writing skills
- Introduce and apply the research and documentation process-APA or MLA
- Develop styles appropriate to varied writing situations
- Develop strategies for making independent critical evaluations of student and published texts, which demonstrates proficiency in writing, evaluating, analyzing, and using material collected from various types of sources.
COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include - Paraphrasing, summarizing and quoting
Documenting sources (MLA or APA)
Developing style
Avoiding plagiarism
Reading and thinking critically
Generating Ideas
Identifying an audience
Developing a thesis
Organizing the essay
Using the rhetorical modes including exposition , argumentation and analysis
Prewriting, drafting, editing and revising
Conducting library and other research methods
