Prepares students for the demands of reading and writing in a variety of college-level courses. Cross disciplinary materials are used in an integrated approach to reading, writing, and critical thinking. Supplements and Supports coursework delivered in ENGL 111 .

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Develop critical reading and writing skills
  2. Develop an understanding of how the components of the rhetorical situation relate to the reading and writing processes
  3. Develop strategies for the composition process such as drafting, collaborating, revising, and peer evaluating to support the production of written documents.
  4. Apply the conventions of standard written English
  5. Establish a systematic approach to improve reading, vocabulary, and comprehension
  6. Introduce and apply the research and documentation process-APA or MLA
  7. Develop strategies for making independent critical evaluations of student and published texts, which demonstrates proficiency in reading and writing, evaluating, analyzing, and using material collected from various types of sources.


COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include - Paraphrasing, summarizing and quoting

Prewriting, drafting, editing, and revising

Documenting sources (MLA or APA)

Conducting library and other research

Developing style methods

Avoiding plagiarism

Following conventions of standard written

Reading and thinking critically

Gathering, evaluating, and using sources

Identifying an audience for research

Developing a thesis

Vocabulary

Using the rhetorical modes including:

Literal and figurative language

GRADING POLICY
A course grade of C or higher is required for successful completion. Students who do not meet this standard are encouraged to retake the Accuplacer placement exam.
