CATX 101 - Physical Principlesclinical Applicationsand Quality Control I

PREREQUISITES: Program Chair Approval
PROGRAM: Medical Imaging
CREDIT HOURS: 3
LECTURE HOURS: 3
DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall, 2018

Provides comprehensive coverage of physical principles of CT and how it relates to the clinical applications for both adults and children. The history and evolution of computed tomography, the CT system operation, and its components and concepts of computed tomography will be discussed. The concept of data acquisition, image reconstruction, image manipulation, and data management will also be addressed.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Examine the foundation, evolution, and history of computed tomography.
  2. Identify the major components of the CT equipment and control consoles.
  3. Explain the concepts of computer technology hardware, software, data management, and informatics.
  4. Analyze image processing, the concept of data acquisition, and the relevancy of CT to the technology of digital image processing.
  5. Evaluate the physical principles of CT.
  6. Demonstrate the process of image reconstruction.
  7. Discuss image manipulation, pre-processing, and post-processing
  8. Assess patient safety, contrast media administration, and lab values.
  9. Administer radiation protection, image gently, and softly.
