CONT 204 - Estimating and Specifications


PREREQUISITES: CONT 106 - Construction Blueprint Reading  and Program Advisor approval

Involves the students with the estimating process for residential construction. Emphasizes reading blueprints and specifications, estimating labor costs, materials take-off and pricing.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate safe practices and procedures.
  2. Properly use and employ the terminology and documents normally used in estimating, specification, and construction practice.
  3. Construct detailed job material lists, calculate costs, determine profits, and submit properly constructed quotes.
  4. Develop organization charts, write job descriptions, write personnel policy, and shop rules.
  5. Apply tools of market research and sales forecasting and make a sales presentation.
  6. Create contracts.
  7. Properly apply bonds and insurance to the billing process.
  8. Examine direct and indirect costs in construction overhead.
  9. Calculate labor costs under a variety of influencing conditions.
  10. Think critically and independently analyze, synthesize, and evaluate technical problems and information.
  11. Identify and interpret health, safety, and welfare standards as dictated by local, state or federal agencies.
