CRIM 112 - Public Safety Dispatching

Studies the basic requirements of a public safety dispatcher and familiarizes the student with the fundamentals required to effectively process 9-1-1 emergencies and classify non emergency situations. This course will also prepare students to navigate a Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and other radio technology, as well as give the student a basic understanding of radio communication techniques.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Recognize the difference between an emergency and nonemergency call.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of information used in the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
  3. Apply knowledge of radio communication techniques and technology
  4. Identify the appropriate public safety agencies needed in a specific situation.
  5. Explain the responsibilities of a public safety dispatcher in regard to the National Incident Management System and Incident Command System.
  6. Demonstrate appropriate interpersonal communication skills of a public safety dispatcher.
  7. Discuss the liability issues associated with public safety dispatching.
  8. Explain the TTY system.
  9. Explain the duties of a public safety dispatcher in various emergency situations.
