ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing


PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITE: IVYT 111 - Student Success in University Transfer  and demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment

Focuses on paragraph and essay writing. Prepares students for the demands of writing in a variety of college-level courses. Provides students with the necessary skills to compose focused, organized, and well-developed expository writings on a number of topics. Requires students to revise their work according to standard writing conventions, including style, grammar, and mechanics. Introduces the process of research. Includes writing assignments that introduce and require the use of MLA and APA documentation styles.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Apply strategies for the writing process such as audience awareness, pre-writing, drafting, collaboration, revision, and peer evaluation.
  2. Construct grammatically correct, accurately punctuated sentences that convey the writer’s intended meaning.
  3. Create paragraphs that have appropriate focus, development, and structure.
  4. Compose essays that adhere to standard essay format, each one containing a clear introduction, thesis, body, and conclusion.
  5. Read and respond to professional and academic writing.
  6. Apply the research process by writing at least one essay that includes selection, evaluation, integration, and appropriate documentation of sources in MLA and/or APA styles.
  7. Compose exploratory writings related to career and educational goals.

GRADING POLICY
A course grade of C or higher is required for successful completion. Students who do not meet this standard are encouraged to retake the COMPASS or ASSET placement exam.
