This course will include a study of the normal and diseased periodontium. The etiology and pathology of periodontal disease will be discussed to include the structural, systemic, functional and environmental factors that impact the disease process. Best practices for therapeutic and preventive periodontics, including treatment modalities, will be emphasized.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
1.Describe the anatomical, histological, and clinical characteristics of periodontal health.
2. Explain the etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal disease.
3. Relate clinical signs to the anatomical changes seen in periodontal disease, with emphasis on inflammation.
4. Compare and contrast current APA classifications of periodontal disease with emphasis on etiology, clinical presentation and treatment.
5. Formulate a plan of preventive procedures for periodontitis during and after active treatment, based on evidence-based best practices.
6.Review the following types of periodontal therapy and explain the indications of:
a.Oral physiotherapy
b.periodontal debridement to include non-surgical periodontal therapy
c.Chemotherapeutics
d.Surgical procedures.
7.Discuss the various types of surgical procedures and the rationale for each type.
8.Explain the role of the dental hygienist in the treatment and management of periodontal disease.
