TRCK 100 - Diesel Preventative Maintenance

Introduces the maintenance requirements and procedures of modern diesel engines and medium and heavy-duty trucks. Proper procedures and requirements for the Federal Highway Safety Inspection (DOT) will be discussed and practiced. In addition, this course will prepare students to take a nationally recognized certification exam.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Identify Proper shop safety practices while in the labs. (a,b,f)
  2. Identify tools, equipment, & fasteners used in truck repair. (b, f)
  3. Identify and explain how the truck repair industry is structured. (g, h, i)
  4. Identify and explain operation of the major systems of the trucks. (e)
  5. Identify and explain what EPA, CAFÉ, FMCSR, CDL, and NHTSA regulations are and how they affect the transportation industry. (f, g, h, i)
  6. Perform complete FMC annual inspection of tractors and trailers. (a,b,e,f,g,h,i)
  7. Examine maintenance requirements and procedures for heavy duty trucks. (a,b,e,f,g,h,i)
  8. Change oil and filters and lubricate the complete chassis. (a,b,e,f,g,h,i)
  9. Perform CDL pre-trip inspections. (a,b,e,f,g,h,i)
  10. Perform the CDL air brake leak down safety test and inspection. (a,b,e,f,g,h,i)
  11. Attain readiness and take SP/2 Mechanical Safety exam. (b, c)
  12. Attain readiness and take SP/2 Pollution Prevention exam. (b, c)
