This course will cover the second and third trimester fetus. The fetal neural axis, facial and cranial development, fetal abdomen, gastrointestinal structures, and abdominal wall will be discussed. The fetal thorax and fetal heart will also be covered. Normal and abnormal development, pathology and pathophysiologic effects will be explained for each of the fetal systems. The embryologic development of each system will be discussed.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Identify on diagram and sonographic image the normal and abnormal fetal anatomy.
- Perform basic protocol for the covered systems in second and third trimester sonography.
- Describe the effects of pathophysiology on maternal and fetal organs and organ systems for the fetal face, neural axis, thorax, heart, gastrointestinal structures, and abdominal wall.
- Define fetal evaluation for anomalies and well-being, testing methods and protocols used for testing in each of the covered systems.
- Recognize the landmarks used for proper measurements of the fetal head and abdomen.
