AGRI 170 - Technology in CEA

CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3
LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2
LAB HOURS MIN: 2
This course is designed to introduce and utilize automation, robotics, and smart technologies integrated into Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) facilities. Topics will include forms of automation, control systems, remote monitoring, robotics, and production systems. The importance of automated systems and systems thinking within CEA facilities is established with a focus on process control.  Students are required to utilize digital technologies to integrate physical systems, smart sensors, and digital data for real-time reporting and notification of process operations. Important growing parameters and environments will be studied in order to achieve highly productive crop growing environments.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  1. Demonstrate remote monitoring of important growing factors and parameters within a controlled environment facility.
  2. Determine and describe the environmental growing parameters within a growing system and define the relationship to crop health and productivity.
  3. Identify, research, and implement probes and sensors utilized in CEA.
  4. Describe the basics of process controllers for automation
  5. Determine the power management of process modules and determine external power requirements.
  6. Demonstrate a working knowledge of control systems including connecting to sensors and probes, programming, and output monitoring.
  7. Properly calibrate and maintain a sensor or probe for ensuring accurate data measurements.
  8. Analyze and interpret collected data using digital technologies.
