AGRI 134 - Aquaponics and Aquaculture CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2 LAB HOURS MIN: 2 TOTAL CONTACT HOURS MIN: 64 Introduces and examines fundamental principles of aquaponic and aquaculture systems. Principles of controlled environment fish production such as RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture System) and aquaponics growing systems will be explored. Students will learn basic design, construction, and maintenance of both types of growing systems.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Describe the components of aquaponic and RAS growing systems.
- Evaluate a system’s growing capacity.
- Evaluate applicable aquatic species for production in a controlled environment.
- Investigate fish and crustacean production lifecycles.
- Investigate methods of disease management in a controlled environment growing system.
- Explain the principles of nitrification and investigate methods of removing solid waste from a controlled environment growing system.
- Calculate proper feed conversions.
- Explain the basic concept of water chemistry.
- Outline the effect of light (natural vs. artificial) and other environmental factors in a controlled environment growing system.
- Evaluate vegetable and microgreen production in an aquaponic system.
- Describe and evaluate media and floating raft beds in an aquaponic system.
- Display the ability to maintain a controlled environment aquatic growing system.
- Design and build a small, controlled environment aquatic system.
COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -
- Equipment used in a controlled environment aquatic growing system.
- Selection of plant and aquatic species for controlled environment growing systems.
- Disease management in a controlled environment aquatic growing system.
- Water quality management
- Water chemistry
- Feed conversion
- Environmental factors influencing growth of plants and animals in a controlled environment aquatic growing system.
- Controlled environment aquatic system design, construction, and maintenance
