This course will focus on dental anatomy, common dental diseases, and basic dental procedures. Topics will include proper charting, routine periodontal care, anesthesia, patient monitoring, analgesia, post-op concerns, and homecare for clients. Dental equipment and instruments will be reviewed. 

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to: 


1. Integrate all aspects of patient management for common dental procedures in companion animal species.
2. Identify and provide appropriate instruments, supplies, and environment to maintain asepsis during dental procedures.
3. Explain the principles of routine dental care and provide recommendations to pet owners.
4. Recognize the levels of periodontal disease and how they affect the patient’s overall health.
5. Identify normal dental anatomy of common veterinary species.
6. Safely and effectively manage patients during all phases of dental procedures.
7. Safely and effectively operate and maintain dental equipment.
8. Integrate all aspects of patient management for common dental procedures in companion animal species.

COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include - * Dental anatomy

* Dental disease, periodontal disease

* Use of dental imaging equipment

* Cleaning of patient’s teeth

* Maintenance and quality control of dental imaging equipment

* Maintaining anesthetic saftey measures for patients

* Operation and maintenance of patient monitoring equipment

* Dental instrument cleaning, identification

* Sterilization and handling of dental equipment

* Cleaning techniques including sterile environment, sterile field, patient preparation

* Anesthetic monitoring and record-keeping

* Composition and maintenance of dental records 

* Restraint and positioning of animal patients
