This course introduces medical records, kennel records, and record maintenance for both in- and outpatients. Includes client and staff communication, follow-up and discharge procedures, inventory control, and other maintenance files required by a veterinary hospital. Topics to be covered include instruction on human resources functions such as hiring, on-boarding, mentoring and training staff, completing performance evaluations, providing feedback, conflict resolution, and addressing diversity, equity, and belonging issues in the workplace. This course also covers relevant trends in veterinary medicine such as veterinary nurse utilization, virtual care, and mental health and well-being.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to: 

1. List items to be included in a complete medical record, kennel record, and record for in- and outpatients.
2. Demonstrate appropriate follow-up and discharge procedures.
3. Describe measures to be taken to ensure proper inventory control and maintenance of other veterinary practices files.
4. Practice communication skills including providing feedback, resolving conflict with clients and staff, working with diverse populations.
5. List strategies and develop a plan for hiring, on-boarding, mentoring, training and evaluating staff.
6. Develop knowledge, awareness, and skills to address diversity, equity and belonging issues in the workplace.
7. Discuss relevant trends in veterinary medicine and their impact on veterinary nurses.

* Practice of professional and ethical behavior, judgement, and communication in medical situations

* Current issues and trends in veterinary profession

* Phone etiquette to provide excellent communication and customer service

* Office Skills: Computer word-processing and spreadsheet creation, management, and retrieval
