This course is an introduction to the husbandry, behavior, care, and use of exotics and laboratory animals. Topics to be covered include discussion of common diseases, biosecurity, and public health as they apply to a variety of exotic and lab animal species. This course provides student training in restraint and handling, health assessment, and nursing skills of exotic and laboratory animal species

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to: 

1. List the national and institutional regulations regarding the housing, care, and use of laboratory animals.
2. Describe the clinical signs and treatments for common diseases of lab animals.
3. Describe common zoonotic diseases of exotic and lab animals as they apply to animal health and public safety.
4. Safely and humanely restrain common exotic and lab animals for procedures.
5. Administer drugs and medications using appropriate sites and routes (IV, IM, SQ and oral dosing) to exotics and lab animal species.
6. Humanely collect blood samples from exotic and lab animal species.
7. Identify and describe the anatomy of the major body systems for exotic mammalian and avian species using skeletons and models.
8. Explain anesthetic and recovery procedures in exotic and lab animal species.

* Public health, safety, and biosecurity 

* Restraint of exotic and lab animals

* Administration of medications 

* Venipuncture in exotic and lab animals

* Anatomy and physiology of exotic and lab animals

* Anesthesia and recovery techniques

* Nursing care including bandaging, fluid therapy, and feeding

* Husbandry of exotic and lab animal species
