This advanced course covers chassis dynamometer operation and analysis of the software generated data. Students should have a background in high performance vehicles. The effects of modifications to vehicles will be stressed.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Demonstrate proper shop safety practices while working with motorsports vehicles and a chassis dynamometer.
- Demonstrate proper vehicle mounting and tie-down methods.
- Demonstrate computer and software skills to properly control and chassis dynamometer.
- Demonstrate basic mathematical skills to solve dynamometer equations.
- Describe engine dynamics, volumetric efficiency as used on racing engines.
- Utilize data to design changes to the engine/chassis to provide desired outcomes.
- Describe the differences between torque and horsepower as measured by a chassis dynamometer.
- Explain how various changes to an engine affect the power output.
- Demonstrate the various tests available utilizing the dynamometer.
