Students gain knowledge and understanding of environmentally sustainable (green) and economically justifiable building construction techniques and methods. The course also focuses on trends in the use of alternative materials and designs in both the residential and commercial/industrial building construction markets.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Identify the personal impact of the student on the environment, and strategies to lessen that impact.
- List the tools and strategies that can be used to help reduce the impact on land and natural resources of building construction, while maximizing the potential for ecological gain during the building process.
- Explain the tools and strategies that can be used to maximize the efficient use of water in a building.
- Name the tools and strategies that can be used to reduce the demand for energy from fossil fuel sources in a building, and their impact on the atmosphere.
- Discuss the tools and strategies that can be used when selecting materials and resources for building construction that can reduce the environmental impact.
- Describe the tools and strategies that can be used to improve the indoor air quality of a building.
- Identify new tools and strategies that can be uniquely used to reduce the environmental impact of building construction.
- Cite examples of typical sustainable (green) building construction best practices worldwide.
