CONT 204 - Estimating and Specifications

Involves the students with the estimating process for residential construction. Emphasizes reading blueprints and specifications, estimating labor costs, materials take-off and pricing.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Demonstrate safe practices and procedures.
- Properly use and employ the terminology and documents normally used in estimating, specification, and construction practice.
- Construct detailed job material lists, calculate costs, determine profits, and submit properly constructed quotes.
- Develop organization charts, write job descriptions, write personnel policy, and shop rules.
- Apply tools of market research and sales forecasting and make a sales presentation.
- Create contracts.
- Properly apply bonds and insurance to the billing process.
- Examine direct and indirect costs in construction overhead.
- Calculate labor costs under a variety of influencing conditions.
- Think critically and independently analyze, synthesize, and evaluate technical problems and information.
- Identify and interpret health, safety, and welfare standards as dictated by local, state or federal agencies.
