This course provides a vendor-neutral approach to database administration, covering both traditional and cloud-based database management systems. Students will learn the essentials of database setup, security, backup and recovery, performance tuning, monitoring, automation, and high availability, along with an understanding of Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) offerings. Students will acquire the administration skills needed for setting up, securing, optimizing, and ensuring high availability of both on-premises and cloud-based database management systems
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Configure and manage databases in both traditional and cloud-based environments, including setup, user access, and database architecture.
- Implement security measures across both on-premises and cloud databases, including role-based access control, data encryption, auditing, and compliance with regulations such as GDPR and HIPAA.
- Create and manage database users, roles, and permissions, ensuring appropriate access levels.
- Design and implement backup and recovery strategies to ensure data integrity and minimize data loss.
- Analyze database performance and optimization using both traditional and cloud-based monitoring tools.
- Configure performance monitoring and alerting.
- Utilize scripts and tools to automate repetitive DBA tasks, such as backups, restores, and maintenance.
- Examine the need for high availability and disaster recovery solutions.
- Explore the use of Database-as-a-Service platforms,
- Compare and contrast the unique capabilities and limitations of DBaaS compared to traditional databases.
