This course will introduce to and familiarize the student with the basic pelvic and first trimester obstetric anatomy, physiology, and sonographic imaging. The student will also learn the relational anatomy of the female pelvis. Pathologies of the organ structures are covered as well as pathophysiologic effects on organs, systems, embryologic processes and sonographic appearances. Sonographic and medical terminology will be covered.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Identify, both on diagram and sonographic image, normal and abnormal female pelvic anatomy to include organs, muscles, ligaments, vascular structures, free spaces and surrounding areas.
- Demonstrate knowledge of relational anatomy in the abdominal cavity.
- List basic protocol for transabdominal and transvaginal pelvic scanning.
- Identify, both on diagram and sonographic image, normal and abnormal first trimester anatomy.
- List basic protocol for 1st trimester sonogram.
- Describe the effects of pathophysiology on organs and organ systems and the sonographic appearances.
- Explain and recognize sonographic pathologic appearances and patterns in pelvic organs and structures as well as first trimester obstetrical exams.
- Demonstrate sonographic techniques, measurement methods, and basic Doppler analysis for pelvic organs and structures as well as first trimester obstetrical exams.
- Acquire basic needed images for a sonographic gynecological and first trimester exams.
- Demonstrate scanning using correct ergonomic techniques
- Define first trimester testing and procedures to include interventional and clinical procedures.
- Understand the important elements of composing and generating preliminary and final reports using correct terminology
- Acquire basic images needed for gynecologic and first trimester sonograms.
