DMSI 110 - Vascular Sonography I and Lab

PREREQUISITES: Admission into the Vascular Sonography Program
PROGRAM: Diagnostic Medical Sonography
CREDIT HOURS MIN: 5
LECTURE HOURS MIN: 3
LAB HOURS MIN: 4
DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall 2022

This course will focus on the principles of hemodynamics and the cerebrovascular system and how disease affects these principles. The study of the cerebrovascular system will include anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pathophysiology. Relational anatomy of the cerebrovascular system will also be discussed and the importance of this anatomy. Cross sectional anatomy as well as alternate techniques of imaging the cerebrovascular system will be covered. Sonographic terminology and applicable medical terminology are explained.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Describe the rules of hemodynamics and how pathology changes these.
  2. Understand the role of noninvasive vascular testing in the diagnosis of vascular disease in the cerebrovascular system.
  3. Differentiate between normal and abnormal greyscale and Doppler findings.
  4. Identify on diagram and sonographic image normal and abnormal anatomy as well as variants.
  5. Relate these findings to the underlying anatomy/physiology and other changes attributable to vascular disease.
  6. Use recommended interpretation criteria, understanding their value and limitations.
  7. Understand the important elements of composing and generating preliminary and final reports using correct terminology.
  8. Understand various regulatory issues affecting the vascular ultrasound profession.
  9. Demonstrate sonographic techniques, measurement methods, and basic Doppler analysis for the cerebrovascular system
  10. List basic protocol for cerebrovascular scanning.
  11. Acquire basic needed images for a sonographic abdominal exam.
  12. Demonstrate scanning using correct ergonomic techniques
  13. Apply proper terminology to the sonographic exams and processes.
