DMSI 210 - Vascular Sonography III and La PREREQUISITES: DMSI 150 - Vascular Sonography II and Lab PROGRAM: Diagnostic Medical Sonography CREDIT HOURS MIN: 4 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 3 LAB HOURS MIN: 2 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall 2022
This course is a continuation of all of the principles and applications learned in Vascular Sonography I and II. Studies will include the upper and lower peripheral venous systems and the abdominal vascular system. There will be a study of the upper and lower peripheral venous systems to include the anatomy, physiology, pathology, pathophysiology, and hemodynamics. Pathologies of the abdominal vascular and organ structures are covered as well as pathophysiologic effects on organs, systems, hemodynamics, and sonographic and Doppler appearances. Hemodialysis grafts and fistulas will also be discussed as well as protocol for these structures. Spectral waveform analysis and changes due to pathology will be presented. Sonographic and medical terminology will also be discussed.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Describe the rules of hemodynamics and how pathology changes these in the peripheral venous and abdominal vascular system.
- Understand the role of noninvasive vascular testing in the diagnosis of vascular disease in the peripheral venous system and abdominal vascular systems.
- Hemodialysis fistulas and grafts and the role of ultrasound testing.
- Differentiate between normal and abnormal greyscale and Doppler findings.
- Identify on diagram, angiogram, MRI, CT, and sonographic image normal and abnormal anatomy as well as variants.
- Relate these findings to the underlying anatomy/physiology and other changes attributable to vascular disease.
- Use recommended interpretation criteria, understanding their value and limitations.
- Understand the important elements of composing and generating preliminary and final reports using correct terminology.
- Understand various regulatory issues affecting the vascular ultrasound profession.
- Demonstrate sonographic techniques, measurement methods, and basic Doppler analysis for the venous, abdominal vascular systems and hemodialysis structures.
- List basic protocol for peripheral venous scanning, hemodialysis structures and abdominal vascular systems.
- Discuss venous insufficiency testing and operative repair
- Demonstrate scanning using correct ergonomic techniques
- Apply proper terminology to the sonographic exams and processes.
