EECT 219 - Biomedical Electronics I PREREQUISITES: APHY 101 - Anatomy and Physiology I or BIOL 100 - Human Biology and HLHS 101 - Medical Terminology and EECT 111 - Introduction to Circuit Analysis PROGRAM: Electronics and Computer Technology CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 1 CLINICAL - NURSING HOURS MIN: 6 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Spring, 2019
Offers study of medical electronics equipment, including ECG, EEG, defibrillators, heart monitors and other monitoring and respiratory equipment.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Describe the principles and the operation of defibrillators and cardioverters.
- Describe the operation of the extracorporeal blood pumps.
- List and describe the major instruments used in respiratory system measurements.
- Describe medical gases and safety systems (cylinders, high blood pressure control).
- Describe the procedure and equipment used in oxygen therapy (regulators, flowmeters, humidifiers/nebulizers, cannulas, oxygen masks, and oxygen tents).
- Describe the procedure and equipment used in artificial mechanical ventilation.
- Describe accessory devices used in respiratory therapy apparatus (respiratory monitor/alarms, oxygen analyzer).
- List typical faults and maintenance procedures for artificial respiratory ventilators.
- Introduce biomedical instrumentation for measuring anatomical and physiological parameters of the brain.
- Describe the procedure and equipment used in cerebral angiography, cranial X-rays, and brain scans.
- Describe the procedure and equipment used in echoencephalography (ECG).
- Describe the procedures and equipment used in electroencephalography (EEG).
- Describe the origin, cranial location, amplitude, and frequency bands of EEG signals.
- Identify and troubleshoot common ICU/CCU instruments.
