EECT 226 - Computer Troubleshooting

A study of techniques for logical troubleshooting of microcomputer systems. Emphasizes basic system components including power supplies, motherboards, memory, floppy and hard disk drives, operation of video displays, and keyboard and mouse connections. Emphasizes system-oriented troubleshooting procedures.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Explain the application of logic analyzers to computer systems.
  2. Demonstrate how to locate faults in computer systems.
  3. Describe the basic system configuration of microcomputers.
  4. Troubleshoot basic microcomputer systems.
  5. Utilize diagnostic software to find hardware faults.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to upgrade microcomputer systems.
  7. Install and configure typical operating systems.
  8. Perform preventive maintenance on microcomputer systems.
  9. Troubleshoot and repair power supply problems.
  10. Define computer peripherals.
  11. Install in video interfaces for proper video display operation.
  12. Connect and properly configure keyboard and mouse.
  13. Install and properly configure disk drives and other storage devices.
  14. Locate, install and properly configure memory.
