ENGL 203 - Advanced Creative Writing

This course offers students advanced opportunities for self- expression in one or more focused literary genres - fiction, poetry, drama, or creative nonfiction.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Develop an advanced understanding and practice of creativity in the medium of language of diverse cultural perspectives
  2. Develop an advanced aesthetic appreciation for creative writing in one or more literary genres - fiction, poetry, drama, or nonfiction-through critical reading and discussing literary works
  3. Demonstrate greater expressive proficiency through a better understanding of such literary conventions as plot, setting, characterization, point of view, meter, imagery, symbolism, figurative language, dialogue, and other such matters of style
  4. Demonstrate a high degree of competency in adhering to conventions of Standard English
  5. Develop revision skills as a part of the writing process  exploring a spectrum of culturally diverse texts and ideas
  6. Distinguish among the creative opportunities and constraints in one or more literary genres.
