British Literature After 1800 introduces the student to British literature from the Romantic, Victorian, and modern periods. Included will be a discussion of the major historical, cultural, intellectual, and political events which influenced the development of British literature.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Understand and appreciate the role literature plays in British society and culture, including its colonies.
- Apply critical reading and thinking skills in analyzing literature.
- Demonstrate awareness of language as a tool for communication, expression, and learning.
- Research and critically evaluate information relevant to the study of literature.
- Identify major movements within British literature.
- Understand the differences between the major genres.
- Examine the impact and role literature plays in their own lives.
- Research and critically evaluate information to produce writing with MLA formal documentation, which consists of in-text citations and a final list of all sources cited, on topics appropriate to the study of literature.
COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -
- The major genres (prose, poetry, and drama)
- Reading and thinking critically
- Major literary movements from the Romantic Period to contemporary British literature
