ENGR 260 - Vector Mechanics-Statics

PREREQUISITES: MATH 212 - Calculus II .
PROGRAM: Engineering
CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3
LECTURE HOURS MIN: 3
DATE OF LAST REVISION: Spring, 2019

Includes resolution and composition of forces, moments, principles of equilibrium and application to trusses and jointed frames, friction, center of gravity and second moments of areas. Uses vector analysis throughout.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Utilize fundamental vector mechanics concepts to understand, explain, and describe the behavior of particle and rigid body equilibrium.
  2. Determine centroids and moments of inertia of areas and masses.
  3. Analyze the behavior of typical engineering components using force and moment equilibrium.
  4. Analyze trusses using the method of joints and the method of sections.
  5. Analyze frames and machines using the method of members.
  6. Apply knowledge of mathematics and science in the performance of engineering hand calculations.
  7. Construct and analyze free body diagrams.
  8. Analyze systems using the laws of dry friction including the determination of impending tipping or impending slipping motion.
  9. Construct axial load, shear, and bending moment diagrams and equations using graphical and mathematical methods for beams.
  10. Calculate basic axial load, shear, and bending stresses and strains through applying the graphical and mathematical methods of beam analysis.
