Energy Industry Fundamentals provides a broad understanding of the electric and natural gas utility industry and the energy generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure, commonly called the “largest machine in the world,” which forms the backbone for the industry. The course includes business models, regulations, types of energy and their conversion to usable energy such as electric power, how generated power is transmitted and distributed to the point of use, emerging technologies and the connection to careers in the energy industry. Safety instruction covers topics including; Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), confined space, lock out/tag out, zero energy state, hazardous materials, storage of flammable materials, storage of fuel gas and high pressure gas cylinders, portable powered tool safety, hand tool safety, record keeping, training, employer enforcement of safety regulations, and right to know.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the basic and emerging principles and concepts that impact the energy industry. [a]
- Apply compliance with procedures necessary to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.
- Discuss the need for workplace safety and workplace safety training programs as covered by the OSHA 10 hour program: [c,f]
