An introduction to the electrical principles required for installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of power lines. Topics include electrical units, power systems overview, ac current and voltage, single and three phase circuits, conductors and cables, transformers, grounding, protective equipment.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Describe and demonstrate the use of protective equipment. [a, f,]
- Utilize power formulas and ohm’s law. [a, b, e]
- Calculate ac current and voltage in single and three phase circuits. [a,b,e]
- Identify and utilize proper protective grounding equipment. [a, d]
- Explain the grounding requirement for poles. [a, d, e]
- Explain the power grid and power delivery systems. [a, c, f, g]
- Explain transformer connections and 3 phase banks. [a, c, f, h]
- Describe the power line safety guide line in accordance with the American Public Power Association (APPA). [b, f, h, i]
- Describe the various types of power cabling and their properties. [a,f,g]
- Explain OSHA rules and regulations for power line workers. [a, f]
