ENRG 109 - Rigging for Line Workers PROGRAM: Energy Technology CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2 LAB HOURS MIN: 2 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall 2022
The student will gain the knowledge of rigging gear inspection, safe rigging procedures and load control, using almost any vertical or horizontal rigging system. Students will tie knots, Splice rope, install block and lines or power lines for hoisting purposes, as well as calculate hook strain and haul line tension for safe working loads. Wire and chains will also be covered.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:- Describe and classify the various types of wire rope and discuss the factors which influence wire rope construction. [b, f, h]
- Define the term safety factor and discuss how it relates to safe working load limits. [b, f, h]
- Discuss the factors which need to be considered when inspecting wire rope slings. [b, f, h]
- Identify the various types of end attachments and describe their application in the rigging operation. [b, f, h]
- List the five common types of fiber ropes and discuss their inherent advantages and disadvantages to the rigging operation. [b, g, h]
- Contrast the advantages and disadvantages of chain slings with those of wire rope slings. [b, f, g, h]
- Discuss the factors which need to be considered when inspecting chain slings. [b, f, g, h]
- List safety considerations necessary when utilizing wire rope, fiber rope, and chain slings. [b, f, g, h]
- Working with wire robe, fiber robe and chains; Explain the proper handling and care of these common rigging tools; Detail correct rope splicing and end-attachment procedures. [b, f, g, h, i]
