This course is an introduction to energy storage systems. It will cover a variety of chemical battery storage systems as well as hydroelectric storage, compressed air energy storage, flywheels, electrochemical capacitors, superconducting magnetic energy storage, thermal energy storage, fuel cells, and molten salt energy storage. Topics include exploring the future of battery storage and smart grid systems. The course will not only cover renewable energy technologies but also traditional energy markets and their need for energy storage.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Understand how the electrical grid works and how energy storage is needed.
- Identify storage needs in the petroleum, coal, natural gas, and renewable energy markets will be examined.
- Differentiate chemical storage systems such as flow batteries, sodium sulfur batteries, lead-acid, nickel cadmium, and lithium batteries will be compared.
- Analyze electrochemical capacitors, super magnetic energy, pumped-hydroelectric storage, compressed air energy storage, and thermal energy.
- Understand each technology from its historical origins, design and operation, cost issues, installations, prospects and challenges.
- Areas of discussion involve energy storage applications, energy storage markets, ownership costs, regulation and power quality.
- Research current renewable energy systems and cutting edge storage facilities.
- Model and size a battery energy storage system.
- Troubleshoot maintenance of traditional battery systems.
- Demonstrate how inverters, charge controllers, and other energy storage devices work in a system.
- Explain how smart grid systems and energy storage systems integrate.
