This course provides students with the financial knowledge and analytical skills needed to effectively manage the finances of a small business. Students will explore and evaluate various funding sources for new ventures while learning to prepare and interpret key financial statements. The course emphasizes cash flow management, break-even analysis, sales forecasting, and the development of sound credit and tax practices. Students will understand the importance of working capital and cash management, identify financing needs, create accurate sales forecasts to assess business viability, and apply them to their business concept. By the end of the course, students will develop a financial management plan for the business they are developing.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Differentiate cash accounting, accrual accounting, and tax accounting from financial accounting reporting.
  2. Describe the various sources of financing available to small businesses.
  3. Identify the calculations, collection processes, payment procedures, and filing requirements for state sales and use taxes.
  4. Assess the primary financial statements (pro forma balance sheet, income statement, cash flow statement, etc.) essential to a new venture.
  5. Apply effective methods to monitor and control cash flow within a business.
  6. Develop the break-even analysis and sales forecast to project business viability and profitability.
  7. Evaluate tools and systems used for financial management to determine their effectiveness in supporting strategic decision-making.
  8. Create a financial management plan.
