ESOL 042 - English for Speakers of Other Languages - Reading II


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or successful completion of the previous level course with a “C” or better and ESOL Advisor Approval.

Stresses comprehension skills and reading strategies using academic materials that focus on personal and cultural values. Focuses on vocabulary expansion, comprehension and interpretation strategies, and experience with a variety of reading styles. Provides practice for increased reading proficiency.

Upper intermediate level following intermediate level.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Interpret various types of reading material for academic purposes.
  2. Analyze reading material for study and testing.
  3. Infer meaning using comprehension and interpretation strategies.
  4. Expand and control vocabulary from context, both actively and passively.
  5. Discuss the content of reading materials with peers.
  6. Differentiate linguistic markers for fact and opinion.
  7. Create summaries of text.
  8. Identify figurative language in a text.
