Stresses comprehension skills and reading strategies using academic materials that focus on personal and cultural values. Focuses on vocabulary expansion, comprehension and interpretation strategies, and experience with a variety of reading styles. Provides practice for increased reading proficiency.
Upper intermediate level following intermediate level.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Interpret various types of reading material for academic purposes.
- Analyze reading material for study and testing.
- Infer meaning using comprehension and interpretation strategies.
- Expand and control vocabulary from context, both actively and passively.
- Discuss the content of reading materials with peers.
- Differentiate linguistic markers for fact and opinion.
- Create summaries of text.
- Identify figurative language in a text.
