ESOL 043 - English for Speakers of Other Languages - Reading III


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or successful completion of the previous level course with a “C” or better and ESOL Advisor Approval.

Stresses comprehension skills and reading strategies using academic materials. Focuses on vocabulary expansion, transitional development, and critical analysis of academic writing. Provides practice for increased reading proficiency.

Advanced level following intermediate levels.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Interpret various types of reading material for academic purposes.
  2. Analyze reading material for study and testing.
  3. Apply reading strategies for literal, inferential, and critical analysis.
  4. Expand and control vocabulary from context, both actively and passively.
  5. Discuss the content of reading materials with peers and contribute to classroom discussions on the content.
  6. Create a study document based on the content of reading materials.
  7. Identify different rhetorical styles.
  8. Recognize and identify figurative language in written work.
