Focuses on listening and speaking strategies for comprehensible input. Provides practice recognizing and producing speech patterns of American English. Allows for conversational practice on topics of cultural values and behaviors.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the main ideas and some details of a short lecture.
- Recognize and produce American English consonant sounds and reductions in English.
- Demonstrate a basic vocabulary to discuss the workplace and/or the academic environment.
- Practice presentation skills including voice projection, eye-contact, and body language.
- Demonstrate a control of grammar in discussions and short presentations.
COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -
- Natural spoken English
- Listening comprehension exercises
- Discussion on American culture and other cultures
- Sound/letter correspondence of consonants
- Basic grammar in context
- Vocabulary expansion
- Small talk, impromptu speeches, short presentations
