ESOL 082 - Intermediate Academic English for Speakers Other Languages
PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate ESOL assessment or successful completion of the previous level course with a “C” or better and ESOL Advisor Approval.

Develops intermediate-level skills in academic English using texts on subjects relating to life skills and cultural values. Provides a holistic approach of teaching and learning so that students develop intermediate-level skills of academic English in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar.
Upper intermediate level following intermediate level.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Interpret and analyze various types of reading material for academic purposes.
- Infer meaning using comprehension and interpretation strategies.
- Expand and control vocabulary from context.
- Discuss the content of reading materials with peers.
- Apply listening strategies to employ natural speech patterns of American English.
- Describe and discuss cross-cultural values.
- Analyze and control basic sentence structure in English.
- Demonstrate the use of phrases and clauses to vary sentence structure.
- Use verb tenses accurately.
- Demonstrate control in using modal auxiliaries.
- Apply stages of writing to produce coherent communication.
- Express ideas in appropriate paragraph form.
- Incorporate accurate English structure and syntax into written communication.
- Respond in written English to assigned readings.
- Apply strategies of revision and editing through peer collaboration.
