ESOL 083 - Advanced Academic English for Speakers of Other Languages
PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate ESOL assessment or successful completion of the previous level course with a “C” or better and ESOL Advisor Approval.

Develops advanced-level skills of academic English using texts on subjects relating to life skills and cultural values. Provides a holistic approach of teaching and learning so that students develop advanced-level skills of academic English in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar.
Advanced level following intermediate levels.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Interpret, analyze and apply various types of reading material for academic purposes.
- Expand and control vocabulary from content, both actively and passively.
- Discuss the content of reading materials with peers and contribute to classroom discussions on the content.
- Assemble a study document based on the content of reading materials.
- Solve problems in a real cultural context by collaborative communication with other speakers.
- Make a comprehensible oral presentation of material in the classroom with audio-visual aids.
- Understand the full content of an academic lecture, learn to take notes on its content and respond to test items.
- Recognize and control the use of advanced grammar concepts.
- Apply various organizational strategies to write effectively.
- Use transitional devices for unified and coherent expression of ideas.
- Write thesis-based essays that incorporate all elements of rhetorical development.
- Employ strategies of revision and editing through self-analysis and peer collaboration.
- Comprehend the main ideas from songs and other cultural materials.
- Understand the content and process of English language films, both documentary and cinema.
