EXER 112 - Group Fitness Instruction


PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITE: HPER 205 - Structural Kinesiology

Introduces the fundamental elements of group fitness instruction. Areas of focus include: modes of exercise, music selection, choreography, cuing, leadership skills, and motivational techniques. A variety of instructional formats will be addressed.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Develop methods for evaluating and improving group exercise participants’ fitness and adherence to exercise.
  2. Discuss injury prevention techniques.
  3. Discuss the importance of cueing for different modes of group fitness.
  4. Develop and demonstrate a variety of group exercise formats.
  5. Discuss group program development for a variety of populations.
  6. Discuss methods for music selection for different modes of group fitness.
  7. Discuss liability concerns for leaders/facilities offering group fitness classes.

MAJOR LAB LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Practice and demonstrate choreography for different modes of group fitness.
  2. Practice and demonstrate verbal and non-verbal cueing techniques (anticipatory, educational, and alignment cues) for different modes of group fitness.
  3. Develop, demonstrate, and instruct a variety of group exercise formats.
  4. Practice taking, instructing, and interpreting heart rates during and after exercise segments.
  5. Develop and teach a group exercise class that includes a warm-up, cardio, strength and a cool-down.
  6. Demonstrate and instruct group exercise modifications based upon RPE (rate of perceived exertion) of participants
  7. Practice modifying or progressing exercise selections to best accommodate all participants’ fitness levels in a group class
