EXER 119 - Sports Ethics in Society
PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing , or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading .

This course examines how sport is affected by society, and how society is affected by sport. Students will examine and discuss the topics of gamesmanship, violence in sport, concussion/injury protocol, gender & racial equality in organized sports, and intercollegiate & professional coaching/sport management. Ethical case study examples are used to improve empathy and understanding of another person’s perspective and choices, and to practice critical thinking skills applied to specific ethical dilemmas.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Define, understand, and apply moral and ethical theories to various situations and decisions made in sports
- Review historical development of social, ethical, and legal aspects of sport
- Understand the role of socialization on motivation, commitment, and opportunities in sport
- Discuss the influences and impact sport has on American values, attitudes, behaviors, and cultural practices
- Identify race-related discriminatory practices and the limited professional opportunities afforded minority groups
- Examine gender, gender inequity, and gender identification in sport
- Recognize the impact of sport media coverage on values in sport and society
- Understand key characteristics of successful athletes and their impact on society
- Discuss the realities, demands, opportunities and sacrifices of professional athletes in sports
- Examine good sportsmanship, fair play, and cheating
- Explore performance-enhancing drugs and illegal doping
- Identify and examine examples of violence in sport
- Differentiate between an intentional injury and those that are an inherent risk of participation in sports
- Investigate eligibility, recruiting and hiring practices in interscholastic, collegiate and professional sports
