This is an introductory weight management course designed to help students understand the physical, psychological, social and global impact of obesity. Students will learn the importance of physical activity and lifestyle changes for the prevention of weight gain, apply coaching strategies, and practice and lead exercise modifications for the overweight client and at risk youth populations.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Discuss the factors that influence body weight
- Discuss the relationship between overweight, obesity, and disease risk
- Differentiate between and discuss the risks and benefits of the various diet fads and nutritional supplements.
- Evaluate behavior modification techniques
- Investigate physical challenges faced by overweight clients.
- Examine strategies for the prevention of eating disorders.
- Explore factors that contribute to excess weight gain including behavior, genetics, medications, and environment
- Investigate the social factors in weight management.
- Develop techniques to deal with psychological obstacles to weight loss
- Discuss the impact of physical activity and lifestyle changes for the prevention of weight gain and obesity
- Create and instruct modified exercise strategies for the overweight and obese client.
- Lead fun physical activities for a variety of age groups to help them become more active, gain confidence, and develop a positive body image and self-esteem
