EXER 210 - Personal Train & Ex Leadership


PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITE: EXER 105 - Exercise Physiology  and EXER 114 - Physical Cond & Strength Train

This course will focus on the fundamental concepts of personal training for an apparently healthy, general population client and the importance of a personal trainer’s role, responsibilities, and job duties.  Students will learn how to evaluate a client’s health history profile per ACSM cardiovascular risk factors, choose appropriate exercise assessments, build individualized exercise programs based upon assessment results and client goals, monitor progression of a client’s fitness level, modify exercises as needed and monitor client safety to prevent injury.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Apply scope of practice for the personal fitness trainer.
  2. Screen and evaluate health history forms for prospective clients
  3. Describe and execute the rules regarding protected health information& records and their use in the fitness industry.
  4. Examine and interpret risk factors for disease.
  5. Demonstrate and practice industry standard fitness assessment techniques for health risk, fitness and movement analysis assessments (Resting HR & BP, BMI, Posture, 7-site Skinfolds with calipers, YMCA Cycle Ergometer cardiovascular test, Joint ROM, Handgrip Dynamometer, and NASM Dynamic Movement Push-Pull-Press-Squat)
  6. Measure and interpret standardized fitness assessments for apparently healthy clients.
  7. Design safe and effective exercise programs for apparently healthy clients
  8. Respond to fitness and health questions that arise in a one-on-one setting
  9. Recognize legal issues regarding fitness leadership
  10. Recognize misleading and incorrect information concerning exercise principles and methodology
  11. Observe and analyze exercise performance for correct form and technique
  12. Identify and apply personal training marketing techniques for career growth

MAJOR LAB COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Measure, interpret and practice standardized fitness assessments for apparently healthy clients including body composition, cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength & endurance, static posture, dynamic joint range of motion, flexibility and neuromuscular.
  2. Design safe and effective exercise programs to meet apparently healthy individualized client programs
  3. Demonstrate exercise instruction techniques for each major component of fitness, including cardiovascular, free weight, and body weight loaded exercises for the prevention of injury
  4. Communicate effectively with clients using both verbal and non-verbal cueing techniques to improve performance of individual exercises
  5. Measure, calculate, and interpret desired body weight from a given body fat percentage.
  6. Demonstrate effective communication skills with clients
  7. Develop and practice delivery of strategies that motivate individuals to overcome barriers and improve exercise program adherence
