PROGRAM: Kinesiology and Exercise Science CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2 LAB HOURS MIN: 3 TOTAL CONTACT HOURS MIN: 80 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall 2023
Introduction to the physiological changes of body systems and the psychological processes associated with aging. Students will address physical activity barriers, adherence strategies, effective assessments, and exercise modes for older populations. Topics include specific health problems associated with an older population, and methods to mitigate age-related declines in physical and mental status including balance and exercise programs designed to improve stability and prevent falls.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Describe the physiological and psychological changes and decline associated with aging.
- Identify and describe specific milestones in the aging process
- Differentiate between modifiable and inevitable age-related changes.
- Develop action plans for intervening in modifiable age-related changes.
- Identify age-related chronic and acute health problems.
- Simulate and explore the sensory changes related to aging and the impact they have on activities of daily living.
- Describe the role of social support for older populations.
- Describe techniques for communicating with older populations.
- Explain the importance and benefits of physical activity and strength training throughout the lifespan
- Explore and describe the unique needs of the Master’s Athlete
- Examine the psychological challenges of the Aging Athlete
MAJOR LAB COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Measure, interpret and practice standardized fitness assessments for older adults including balance, gait, joint range of motion and posture
- Design, demonstrate and instruct safe and effective exercise techniques (strength, flexibility, neuromuscular and cardiovascular) for older adults utilizing appropriate exercise modifications
- Design, demonstrate and instruct exercises specifically to improve balance and stability for the prevention of falls
- Analyze and create a plan for an older adult to age in place safely and effectively in their current home
- Demonstrate and practice effective communication with an older adult using appropriate verbal and non-verbal techniques for sensory deficits.
