Studies the horticulture principles of plant structure, growth and development and soil science. Includes cultural practices, propagation techniques, plant care, nutrition, maintenance, and disease and insect control.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expect to:
- Define appropriate plant nomenclature.
- Explain plant growth and development.
- Demonstrate an understanding of soil structure.
- Explain composting techniques and the benefits of organic matter and soil improvements.
- Demonstrate knowledge in planting techniques and plant propagation.
- Identify plant disorders and diseases, prescribe methods of control.
- Identify insect and pest, prescribe methods of control.
- Identify weeds and prescribe methods of control.
- Demonstrate an understanding of integrated pest management.
- Demonstrate knowledge in plant maintenance.
- Design a site management plan.
- Inventory and choose available and research materials.
